James Wilding - ITQ

James Wilding already had an Apprenticeship qualification under his belt, so when he decided to make a significant career change, he saw an Apprenticeship as the way to help him achieve his goals. His success speaks volumes about the value Apprenticeships can offer.

What is your current position?
Sales Office Manager.

Who is your employer?
Image Through Quality Ltd.

How long have you been with your employer?
13 Years.

Were you with this employer before you began your Apprenticeship?
No, WBTC found the position for me.

Describe your job. What do you do on a day to day basis?
I am a field sales solutions consultant with the aim of finding new business opportunities and managing existing accounts. I am also in charge of a team of 10 sales people ensuring we meet monthly, quarterly and annual sales targets and I am also in charge of the general administration of the sales department.

What Apprenticeship programme did you do?
I completed a 2 year NVQ level 2 in sales and marketing in 2003 and was then promoted to a full salesman.

Have you been promoted at all as a result of your Apprenticeship training?
Yes, once on completion of my apprenticeship and then twice there after based on my achievements.

What got you started on the road to an Apprenticeship?
I was working in the catering industry and was desperate to make a change in my life and give myself better opportunities for the future.  I had already completed an apprenticeship in catering and knew that there were clear benefits of getting qualifications on the job along with real life work experiences
.

How has an Apprenticeship helped you?
It helped me get my foot in the door with a career that I never thought I would have the confidence to get into.  My original plan was to train as a plumber or an electrician before Matt Garvey identified that I might be destined for much more.

How did WBTC help you?
Guidance and NVQ training in my chosen career path and in more recent months, two more apprentices that will be starting with the firm in November this year.

Where is your future, or how do you see your career taking shape?
My career has progressed far beyond my original expectations 13 years ago.  I have, with WBTC’s initial support I have worked hard in building not just my career, but the future of the firm that I work for.  One day I hope to be running this or another company and this would not have been possible if I had not taken a leap of faith in a new career choice with WBTC
.

Would you recommend Apprenticeships to others?
Yes definitely. Anyone that is considering starting out in a new career should at least have a look into how an Apprenticeship could help them. The way I thought of it was, I could either go to college and retrain with no guarantee of a job at the end of it, or I could get training on the job and get paid for it.
