Employer Placements

Great Start, Traineeships and Work Placements

At WBTC all our Great Start learners have the opportunity to get ready for an Apprenticeship and continue their further education. We have a wide range of work based learning opportunities, and on Great Start this can be a work based learning placement with an employer or a Traineeship that will benefit the learner with vocational skills alongside continued study. Unlike an Apprenticeship these are not employed placements but they are designed to help the learner into work. Learners will be entitled to a bursary while on a Great Start programme.  All learners will need to study maths and English if they have not achieved GCSE Grade C or Level 2 Functional Skills.  We have the following options:

Great Start Work Placement Programme

This programme is for 16-18 year old learners or 19-24 with SEN. The programme consists of one or two days per week in a real workplace over a long period of time – up to 11 months.  Most suitable for learners whose main aim is to be in full time employment within 12 months but need to improve their maths and English. They have some idea of which sector they would like to try, however, you can have more than one work placement over the course of your programme if you are unsure of your career pathway.

Alongside your work placement, you will study maths and English (if not already achieved GCSE grade C or above or Level 2 Funcional Skills).  BTEC Workskills to develop your key employability skills and Level 1 Safeguarding.

Great Start Traineeship

This programme is for 16-18 year old learners or 19-24 with SEN or does not have a full Level 3 qualification.  This programme consists of 2-3 days per week with an employer over a period of 6 weeks to 6 months.  A structured work placement with the objective of moving quickly into a full time Apprenticeship or employment with training.  Most suitable for learners who will be ready for an Apprenticeship within 6 months and who have a very clear idea of the sector they want to work in. Ideally they will already have achieved at least level 1 English and maths, be highly motivated and want to enter into work.  If you already have good L2 qualifications and want an Apprenticeship but are struggling to get one, this could be ideal for you.

There is no substitute for real life experience and quality time spent with an employer and it looks really good on a CV. Great Start is ‘a great opportunity’ to prepare for a career. All our learners have on going information, advice and guidance and we gear the Great Start to the needs of the young person.

"Both programmes focus well on the learners gaining employment-related skills and behaviours and include extensive, good-quality work placements" Ofsted 2017
